Wedding Amidst the MCO

I have so many people to thank for making our day a reality especially my mama and abah, thank you for everything they did to prepare for this big day. I know it meant a lot to them bcs I am their only one and only daughter, so planning this wedding was a special journey for us.

Initially, we envisioned a wedding where all our loved ones could gather from different states to celebrate. However, as the MCO extended and movement between states was restricted, we were forced to re-evaluate every part of our plan. Family members, friends and even some vendors were unable to attend or assist due to the travel bans. I am so sorry and sad for my family from my dad’s side, especially my atuk and nenek also my aunties uncles and cousins from Johor that couldnt be there at my wedding day. Same goes to my university friends who are in various states unable to attend due to this.

This forced us to downsize, simplify and embrace the intimacy of a smaller event. Instead of lamenting what we couldnt have, we began focusing on what we could. The restrictions, though inconvenient, became an opportunity to create a deeply personal and meaningful ceremony.

Gone were the elaborate venues and grand guest lists. Instead we found beauty in smaller, personal touches that made the day our own. With a much reduced guest list, we hosted the ceremony in a local venue close to home, adhering strictly to safety protocols. Kudos to the Emcees for regularly reminding the guests present to always wear a facemask except when eating and maintaining social distancing.

Another challenge was adjusting to the unpredictable nature of the MCO itself. There were times when we werent sure if the wedding could proceed as planned or if we would have to postpone indefinitely like our nikah ceremony. Every week, there will definitely be an announcement from the government whether the wedding ceremony can be held or not. That's what makes it feel hard for us to adjust the wedding date and to see if the rental hall is available on that date. But instead of being overwhelmed, we learned to embrace flexibility, making backup plans and taking each day as it came.

Though it was tough not having everyone physically present, the silver lining was the intimate nature of the wedding. Every person who could attend played a significant role, and the closeness we felt to them was unparalleled. There was something deeply meaningful about stripping away the non essentials and focusing solely on the union itself.

The wedding ceremony itself felt surreal. Despite all the restrictions and compromises, standing there with my husband felt like the ultimate triumph of love over circumstance.

Our wedding during the MCO, under the cloud of travel bans and limitations, became a story we would tell for years to come. It taught us patience, resilience, and the importance of flexibility. More than that, it reaffirmed the idea that love is not defined by grand gestures or perfect circumstances but by the strength to endure together.

If I could go back, would I change anything? Yes. Maybe the wish to have everyone close to us in the same space.. But otherwise, not much. The wedding was more intimate, more meaningful, and more memorable than we had originally imagined. It reminded us of the true essence of marriage.

While the pandemic placed unforeseen obstacles in our path, it also gave us a wedding day filled with unexpected beauty and deep gratitude.

Alhamdulillah for everything and special thanks to my mom and dad.

Wedding settled!
